19TH CENTURY, AUSTRIA, PERSONAL WRITING DESK, EMPRESS ELISABETH I

regular price $44,500.00
Subtotal: $44,500.00

This personal writing desk, dating back to the 19th century, originates from Austria and is closely linked to Empress Elisabeth I, also known as Sissi. Crafted primarily from beech wood with nut wood trim, the desk’s surface showcases intricate marquetry in various types of mahogany, producing exceptional three-dimensional effects. Designed as a travel companion, its foldable mechanism allows it to reduce in size to a third, highlighting the practical craftsmanship of the period. Initially a personal gift from the Empress to her chambermaid, the piece was carefully preserved through generations and has now been meticulously restored with a polished shellac finish. This desk is not only a piece of furniture but a significant historical artifact from the imperial court of Bad Ischl, embodying the legacy of its distinguished owners and reflecting the artistry and function of its era.
